Mark’s eyes locked with mine just before we began to run around the soccer fields. There was a wicked gleam in his that said, You can’t beat me. No matter how hard you try you can’t beat me. Here, I am a god. His insufferable smirk made me want to slap him, but instead when Coach blew his whistle I tore out as if the Hounds of Hell pursued me.

I observed Mark over the following days. He was alternatively boisterous and subdued, loud and pensive. He was a typical jock and yet at times it was as if someone flipped a switch and Mark’s confident, full-of-himself demeanor deflated. The more I watched him, the more I witnessed cracks in the persona he’d constructed for himself. When he was alone and thought no one was watching, the walls came down and I witnessed a sad and lonely boy. More telling were those times when Mark was playing soccer, horsing around in the locker room, or laughing with his friends at lunch and suddenly he became quiet and looked as if he might cry. Few would have caught such aberrations if they weren’t watching for them, but the more I observed Mark, the more curious about him I became.

My curiosity was piqued further when I spotted Dylan and Mark walking together towards Dylan’s house. Perhaps it makes me a stalker, but I followed them and sure enough, Mark went inside with Dylan.

Mark was a puzzle. He seldom talked about girls in the locker room, but he never talked about guys. I would never have pegged him as gay, but what was he doing with Dylan? The two had nothing in common. They were practically opposites. Mark was as masculine as Dylan was feminine. Mark was athletic and, despite his best efforts, Dylan was not. Mark and Dylan could have been paired for a sitcom titled The New Odd Couple. So what were they doing together? The only possibility I could come up is that Dylan was blowing Mark, but I had trouble picturing it. I guess it wasn’t an outrageous idea. Lots of straight boys took advantage of Dylan’s services so why not Mark? He was a guy.
